Plain Stilling Basin Performance below 30° and 50° Inclined Smooth and Stepped Chutes

چکیده

Energy dissipators, such as stilling basins, are usually required at the toe of stepped chutes to achieve adequate and safe operation spillway. Stepped chute hydraulics has been extensively studied in last several decades, however, only limited knowledge is available on basin performance below chutes. In particular, effect slope remains unknown, despite being a central design issue. Therefore, an experimental campaign was performed using 30° or 50° inclined smooth with adjacent conventional plain basin. The results indicated that, within basin, surface characteristics roller well hydraulic jump lengths practically independent slope. This further strengthens previous findings that require 17% longer dimensionless consequently lengths. also confirmed generated increased extreme fluctuating bottom pressure entrance area. With increasing slope, latter were found significantly magnify. However, magnitudes not expected provoke cavitation damage inflows induced aeration entrance, irrespective

Flow Resistance and Design Guidelines for Embankment Stepped Chutes

Recently the design flows of many dams have been re-evaluated, resulting in spills often larger than the original ones. In many cases, occurrence of revised flows would result in dam overtopping because of insufficient storage and spillway capacity of reservoirs. Embankment dams whilst common are more likely to fail than other dam types when overtopped in an uncontrolled manner because of breac...

Hydraulics of stepped chutes: The transition flow L’hydraulique des chutes en marches d’escalier: L’écoulement de transition

Stepped spillway flows may behave as a succession of free-falling nappes at low flows and as a skimming flow at large discharges. However there is a range of intermediate flow rates characterised by a chaotic flow motion associated with intense splashing: i.e. the transition flow regime. Detailed air–water flow properties in transition flows were measured in two large experimental facilities. T...

Aeration and air–water mass transfer on stepped chutes with embankment dam slopes

Stepped spillwayflows are characterised by significant free-surface aeration downstream of the inception point of air entrainment. The stepped design is advantageous for applications which require large energy dissipation and strong flow aeration. While the energy dissipation rate for embankment stepped spillways was studied previously, the optimum design for aeration and air–water mass transfe...

Effect of End Sill in the Performance of Stilling Basin Models

An experimental investigation on effect of end sill on the performance of stilling basin models for a non circular pipe outlet has been presented in this research paper. New physical models for non circular pipe outlet stilling basin have been developed in the laboratory. These newly models were tested in the laboratory for three Froude numbers namely Fr = 1.85, 2.85 and 3.85. The new models ar...
